Looking back on my whole senior project I am glad I chose the topic I did. I really enjoyed researching how appearance effects self-esteem for my senior research paper. At the beginning of the year I was nervous and very overwhelmed because of all the stuff we had to do. Taking each step dead line by dead line was a lot easier that I thought it would be. The hardest part for me was having enough time with my mentor but I got it done on time and I am very proud that I did.
Before I started my presentation I didn't know what to write or how to start. Mrs. Nightingale gave us an outline to go by and that was very helpful. When I finally got started it was a lot easier than I thought it would be. Then, I had to present in front of the class and I was very nervous. I was shaky when I got up there but I took a deep breath and started talking. I talked too fast so I didn't meet my time. I did it again and my time was shorter yet. I am worried about not meeting the required ten minutes because I don't want to do it again. I plan on presenting more this week to get comfortable enough to meet my time.
Today in class we were talking about presentations. I am a little nervous because I do not do well talking in front of people. I think that the more I practice, the better I will be. It's crazy to think that we are almost completely all done with senior projects. It also makes me feel relieved because we have been working and stressing over senior projects all year and it will be great to not have to worry about them.
During the Senior Project process I learned that it is very important to have my stuff done on time. I also learned that it is my responsibility to know when the deadlines are. I watched some of my classmates get frustrated with the teachers but it is not the teachers' fault because it is the student's project, not the teachers. The teachers have to help more than one person so I understand how it could be confusing and frustrating at times. It is important to stay calm and keep working and doing the best you can.
I did my final product and it looked great. I touched up Grace's highlights with Hailey's assistance to make sure I wouldn't mess up. I started by sectioning Grace's hair into five sections. I pulled the bottom part of her hair to the side because that part was not highlighted previously. I went back with Hailey to mix the color. I then started on one section. I took a very thin piece and used a comb to separate what was highlighted and what was not. I then took the dye and put it in her hair with foil. I continued this until I was done. She had to sit for thirty-five minutes for her color to settle in. Then, I washed her hair out to get the color off. I then dried her hair and straightened it. I liked the way it turned out and was proud that I did not mess up.
To create the smoky eye with eyeshadow you need three to four colors. First, you grab a smaller brush and a very light and shiny/sparkly color and put that in the corner closest to the nose and right below the eyebrow. Next, with second color, usually a medium soft color, start to put that on the eyelid right where you stopped with the first color and continue to almost the end of the eyelid. Then, with a darker color, start below the eyebrow about half way on the eyelid and create a triangle. Next, with a very very dark color put a small dot right on the end corner of the eyelid. Last, use a clean brush and dab the eyelid to blend the colors together. There is how to create a smoky eye.
One of Hailey's clients was willing enough to let me do her makeup. Hailey did one side and I did the other. It was interesting because you have to pick the right color of foundation for that person otherwise it will not look good. First, you start with primer and rub that in all over their face. Next, you take a sponge pad and put liquid foundation on it and rub that in all over the person's face to have an even looking coverage. Then, you take white powder and a brush and brush it over the client's face to collect any oils and to set the liquid foundation into place. Then you take a bronzer and put it on their cheekbones with a brush. After that you do the same thing with blush just above the bronzer. Then, you take a larger brush to blend them in so you have a softer look.
I missed a day of school to go shadow my mentor. She was fairly busy that day so I had a lot of learning opportunities. She was going to try something new on one of her clients and I was excited to see the outcome. The client's hair was a mix between blonde and brown to start so Hailey was going to add a silver looking color to the ends. No one knew how it would turn out so they took a risk. The product would wash out after a few washes anyway so it wasn't permanent. After it was all done and her hair was styled, it didn't turn out the way either expected. It was more of a blue, but it didn't look bad. That's one thing about being a cosmetologist, not knowing what the outcome will be, and you are the one responsible for it.
For my final project I plan to touch up Grace's highlights. When I think about it I get kind of nervous because I don't want to mess up. I know that Hailey will be there watching me to make sure I don't, and if I do, she will be able to fix it. I can't imagine coloring someone's hair a new color and not knowing what it will look like until it is done and dried. The one time when I went to shadow, Hailey let me wax someone's eyebrows and that made me very nervous. I didn't want to mess up because if you mess up and take too much off, you can't fix them. You would just have to wait until they grow back. To be a good cosmetologist you have to think ahead and be very careful because you don't want to mess up on someone's appearance, especially if you can't fix it right away. I hope that when it comes time to touch up Grace's highlights I will be calm enough to do a good job and not mess up.
I got back from state wrestling and I was thinking about my senior project. I was thinking about all the stuff I had to do yet and how little of time I have. I still need to shadow Hailey because I don't have enough hours. I will probably have to take a day out of school to go shadow because she does not have a lot of clients after 3:30 in a day. The last time I went to shadow Hailey I really enjoyed watching her mix the colors and put it in their hair. My favorite part was seeing the result.
